Liverpool's Missed Opportunity: Former Coach Reveals Attempts to Sign Arsenal's Neto

In a surprising revelation, former Liverpool goalkeeping coach John Achterberg has disclosed that the Reds made several attempts to sign Neto, the experienced Brazilian goalkeeper currently on loan at Arsenal.

Arsenal secured Neto on a season-long loan from Bournemouth last month to bolster their squad after David Raya's arrival from Brentford and Aaron Ramsdale's transfer to Southampton. However, Achterberg's comments suggest that the Brazilian could have donned the iconic Liverpool shirt instead.

During a recent appearance on the LFC Transfer Room Podcast, Achterberg explained, “Every year, I would analyze and list goalkeepers coming into the leagues. I aimed to identify players compatible with our style of play, and Neto was certainly one we tried to recruit several times, but the deal never materialized.

Neto, who has yet to make his Arsenal debut, may finally see action during the upcoming Carabao Cup match against Bolton Wanderers at The Emirates. The 35-year-old's move was facilitated by Bournemouth's own transfer after acquiring Chelsea's Kepa Arrizabalaga on loan.

Since arriving in the Premier League in 2022, Neto has amassed a wealth of experience playing for top clubs, including Barcelona, Valencia, Juventus, Fiorentina, and Athletico Paranaense. Expressing his excitement about joining Arsenal, Neto shared, "I’m realizing a dream in my life, a dream come true. I grew up as a fan of two teams, my local club in Brazil and Arsenal. I feel incredibly lucky to be here."

Arsenal's Ambitions for the Future

In addition to Neto's signing, Arsenal is eyeing a move for Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic next summer. With a goal of clinching their first Premier League title since the 2003-2004 season, the Gunners aim to strengthen their attacking options, especially after falling short against Manchester City in the last two seasons.

Doubts linger over whether current strikers Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus can match the prolific scoring ability of rivals like City’s Erling Haaland. Vlahovic has been marked as a prime target, indicating a potential reshaping of Arsenal's front line.

Furthermore, reports suggest Arsenal might be ready to let go of Takehiro Tomiyasu, with Juventus and Inter Milan reportedly interested in the Japanese defender. Injuries limited Tomiyasu to just 30 appearances last season, raising questions about his long-term future at the club.

With such significant developments, fans are left wondering how the Gunners will maneuver through the upcoming transfer window and whether they can make the necessary changes to reclaim their spot at the top of English football. Stay tuned for more updates as these stories unfold!
