Dr. Werasak emphasized that individuals who have an incessant urge to munch on ice—often to the tune of consuming 2 to 11 cups daily—should consult a healthcare professional, as this behavior could stem from unrecognized medical conditions. Pagophagia is categorized under pica, a broader eating disorder where individuals persistently consume non-nutritive substances, which can include items such as dirt, soap, and even paint chips.

Interestingly, recent studies have drawn connections between pagophagia and conditions such as iron deficiency anemia, stress, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and even atypical childhood development. According to a noteworthy study published in the Journal of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, individuals suffering from low iron levels are more prone to developing cravings for ice.

The crux of the theory lies in understanding how the body and brain respond to anemia. Dr. Werasak explains that anemia can lead to fatigue due to the diminished oxygen supply to the brain. Nonetheless, a compelling study involving 81 individuals diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia showed that 13 of them had strong cravings for ice.
