A Tribute to Defenders and Pioneers

SINGAPORE – On September 12, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong took to social media to pay heartfelt tribute to the brave individuals who defended Singapore and to the pioneers who tirelessly rebuilt the nation following World War II, marking a significant 80 years since the war's end.

In his Facebook post, PM Wong stated, "As we celebrate 60 years of independence, we honor the sacrifices of those who defended our homeland and those who endured the trials of war to reconstruct our lives." He emphasized the importance of remembering the heavy toll of conflict and the values of courage and resilience that must continue to guide the nation.

Reflecting on a Dark Chapter

The legacy of the Japanese Occupation, which ended when Lord Louis Mountbatten accepted Japan’s surrender at the former City Hall, remains vivid in Singapore's collective memory. PM Wong noted that for many in the post-war generations, these events echo through the stories shared by parents and grandparents.

He referred to the Sook Ching massacre as one of the most harrowing moments in Singapore’s history, reminding everyone that such tragedies are forever etched in the nation’s psyche.

A Ceremony of Remembrance

To commemorate this significant anniversary, a solemn ceremony took place at the Kranji War Memorial. The event honored those who bravely fought for Malaya and Singapore, as well as the countless civilians who lost their lives during the war.

As part of the ceremony, a remembrance bell, first rung during the 70th anniversary of the Fall of Singapore in 2012, chimed five times to signify the years that marked the conflict. The occasion saw local organizations, veterans, and international dignitaries pay their respects by laying wreaths. A poignant gesture from the Japanese community followed, with the laying of Senbazuru – one thousand origami paper cranes symbolizing peace.

Upholding Peace and Unity

PM Wong’s message resonates deeply as Singapore continues to reflect on its past while committing to safeguard its future. He called on all citizens to unite in preserving the peace and prosperity that has been hard-won through sacrifice and resilience.
