SDP's Strategic Move in GE2025

In a surprising turn of events, the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) is poised to withdraw from contesting the Holland-Bukit Timah GRC in the upcoming General Elections 2025, a constituency they’ve aggressively campaigned in for the last three elections. Secretary-General Chee Soon Juan revealed this shift during a media briefing following the launch of their new campaign slogan, "Thrive, Not Just Survive."

Focusing on Quality Over Quantity

Chee emphasized that the decision stems from a desire to concentrate resources more effectively. He mentioned, "At this stage, it looks unlikely for us to contest there... we need to consolidate our resources." Instead of spreading themselves thin, the SDP aims to prioritize the strength and quality of their candidates.

Confirmed Constituencies for SDP Candidates

Currently, the SDP has confirmed candidates for four key constituencies. They will be targeting the five-member Sembawang GRC and the four-member Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC, along with the single-member seats of Bukit Panjang and Sembawang West. Chee, himself set to contest Sembawang West SMC, remarked on the need for a more substantial presence than just a handful of posters.

A Closer Look at the Candidate Lineup

In the Sembawang GRC, SDP plans to field deputy head of policy James Gomez, vice-chairman Bryan Lim, treasurer Surayah Akbar, alongside party members Alfred Tan and Damanhuri Abas. Their four-member slate for Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC showcases party veteran Jufri Salim, alternative news site founder Ariffin Sha, theatre director Alec Tok, and dedicated caregiver Gigene Wong.

Intense Showdown in Bukit Panjang

The slogan launch, which took place at Block 257 Bangkit Road in Bukit Panjang SMC, set the stage for a highly anticipated competition. SDP Chairman Paul Tambyah will once again face off against incumbent PAP MP Liang Eng Hwa. The rivalry heats up as both candidates were seen engaging with residents on the same day.

A Formidable Contest Is Ahead

Liang, calling Tambyah a "formidable opponent," acknowledged that both candidates possess the ability to win in the upcoming elections. Despite the resources that Liang enjoys from the PAP, Tambyah expressed optimism based on the SDP’s strong performance in the previous election. He plans to maintain a campaign strategy centered around key issues such as healthcare, housing, and education.

Community Engagement in the Midst of Campaigning

On April 19, Liang was seen at a family carnival, where he chose not to comment on election matters, opting to enjoy the festivities instead. The event featured traditional carnival attractions, including games and horse rides, showcasing the community spirit despite the competitive atmosphere.

What's Next for SDP?

As the GE2025 draws closer, the SDP is preparing for a transformative election strategy, ensuring each candidate will deliver impactful representation. With a focus on deep community engagement and tactical consolidation, they aim to make their mark in Singapore's political landscape.
