SINGAPORE –
Jackson Lam, the former chairman of the People’s Action Party (PAP) branch in Hougang, is poised to be a significant asset for the party and Parliament if he decides to run in the anticipated upcoming election. Law and Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam expressed strong support for Lam during a recent constituency event in Nee Soon GRC on March 29, stating, “He was my branch secretary, and he is very good on the ground. I would love to see him contest the elections.”
When questioned whether Lam would be fielded as a candidate in Nee Soon, Shanmugam remarked, "Well, from anywhere. He will be an asset to the party, to the Government and Parliament, wherever he contests from. Where he contests, and whether he contests, you have to wait and see."
Jackson Lam has become a familiar face at Nee Soon constituency events, particularly following his resignation as the PAP branch chairman in Hougang SMC on February 17. The 40-year-old local leader is not alone in this emerging political landscape; he is joined by other potential candidates like former Nominated MP Syed Harun Alhabsyi, 39; grassroots volunteer and civil servant Lee Hui Ying, 36; and intellectual property lawyer Deryne Sim, 40. The Straits Times reports that both Dr. Syed Harun and Lam are being considered as candidates for the PAP in the upcoming general election, which many anticipate will occur in the first half of this year.
During the DBS event, where Shanmugam and Lam mingled with fellow MPs and community members, there was some speculation about the political futures of others present. Notably, Ang Mo Kio GRC MP Nadia Ahmad Samdin was also in attendance, leading to inquiries about her political ambitions. Shanmugam clarified that not everyone at such community events is automatically a candidate, emphasizing that many are volunteers or engaged community members.
Lam, reflecting on his commitment to serving the community, stated, “I believe in serving the community with a heart and will continue to do so.” He previously served as the branch secretary for Chong Pang for seven years, underscoring his dedication to grassroots development.
Shanmugam also highlighted the importance of addressing both local and broader national issues during constituency engagements. He mentioned that platforms for residents, students, and professionals exist to discuss topical matters, including significant international events like the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
"The government places a high priority on feedback and engagement with the public," Shanmugam noted. He elaborated that numerous consultations are held regularly to discuss pressing issues and gather citizen perspectives, emphasizing the government's commitment to transparent dialogue.
As the political landscape in Singapore continues to evolve, all eyes will be on Jackson Lam and the other promising figures who may soon take up the mantle of leadership in Parliament, shaping the future of Singaporean politics. Will Jackson Lam be the fresh voice that the people have been waiting for? Time will tell!
