Last week, we reported an intriguing development in Apple's upcoming iOS 18.2 beta: the ability to temporarily share the location of your AirTag with trusted individuals, and in a notable twist, with airlines as well. Today, Apple has officially announced this groundbreaking feature, unveiling further details that promise to enhance the travel experience.

In a move that could redefine how travelers track their belongings, Apple revealed that over 15 major airlines will soon implement this feature, expected to roll out in the upcoming months. Notable airlines include Delta, United, Aer Lingus, Air Canada, Air New Zealand, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, Iberia, KLM, Lufthansa, Qantas, Singapore Airlines, SWISS, Turkish Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, and Vueling. And the exciting news doesn’t stop there; more airlines are set to join the initiative over time.

The integration of this feature into each airline's customer service channel will allow for a streamlined approach to locating mishandled or delayed luggage. With an AirTag affixed to their bags, travelers can now assist airlines in quickly identifying lost items, making travel less stressful and more secure.

For those using iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices running iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, or macOS Sequoia 15.2, users will have the capability to generate a "Share Item Location" link within the Find My app. This link allows trusted contacts to access a web page displaying the item’s location on a map, with updates in real-time.

Apple has assured users that they worked closely with airlines to implement systems that securely and privately accept these location-sharing links. Access will be restricted to a select group of individuals, with recipients needing to authenticate themselves via either their Apple Account or partner email address. The shared location will cease once the item is reclaimed, or at any time the owner opts to stop the sharing. Furthermore, shared locations will automatically expire after seven days for added security.

Eddy Cue, Apple's services chief, emphasized the significance of this feature, stating, "The Find My network and AirTag have proven to be a powerful combination for users while traveling, providing invaluable location information when bags have been misplaced or mishandled. With Share Item Location, we're excited to give users a new way to easily share this information directly with third parties like airlines, all while protecting their privacy."

Not only will this innovative feature work for items equipped with an AirTag, but it will also extend to compatible third-party accessories and item trackers within the Find My network.

Excitingly, Apple has confirmed that the full release of iOS 18.2 is scheduled for December, coinciding with the launches of iPadOS 18.2 and macOS Sequoia 15.2. Hold on to your bags, travelers – this feature could change the way you travel forever!
