Spain’s leading secure satellite communications provider, Hisdesat, is gearing up for a groundbreaking launch of its SpainSat Next Generation I (SNG I) satellite aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. Scheduled for lift-off on January 29 from Cape Canaveral, Florida, at 8:34 PM EST (10:34 AM CET on January 30), this mission promises to revolutionize the way governments and emergency response teams across Europe and beyond communicate.
Backed by the European Space Agency (ESA), the SpainSat SNG I will facilitate more cost-effective, adaptable, and secure communication services not only for Europe but also extending its reach to regions including North and South America, Africa, the Middle East, and even as far as Singapore in Asia.
This launch is a testament to the collaborative spirit of European space initiatives, embodied in the Pacis 3 Partnership Project, which involves ESA’s Connectivity and Secure Communications divisions, Hisdesat, and Airbus Defence and Space. The SpainSat Next Generation programme includes two satellites rooted in Airbus’ innovative Eurostar Neo product line, highlighting a significant evolution in regional space cooperation.
The design of the satellite is cutting-edge, weighing in at a hefty 6.1 tonnes and towering at 7.2 meters. Equipped with specialized technology designed to minimize interference, the advanced communications payload allows for rapid data transmission while safeguarding privacy and security. Notably, the satellite’s unique antenna system dynamically adjusts its coverage based on user demands and environmental conditions, ensuring reliable communication at all times.
Following its launch, the SNG I will ascend to a geostationary orbit, approximately 35,786 km above the Earth—nearly three times the planet's diameter. Once positioned, it will undergo rigorous in-orbit tests before it begins its mission of providing uninterrupted communication services.
“SpainSat NG represents the future of secure satellite communications in Europe,” reflected Laurent Jaffart, ESA’s Director of Connectivity and Secure Communications. “This launch is a pivotal stride in delivering adaptable and secure communication channels that will greatly benefit governmental users throughout Europe and beyond.”
Oscar Del Rio Herrero, ESA’s Pacis 3 Project Manager, added, “Collaborating on the integration of the Pacis 3 payload with SpainSat NG I emphasizes the robust partnership vision we share in enhancing Europe's communication capabilities. It’s not merely about secure transmissions; it's about ensuring Europe maintains its competitive edge in space technology.”
Hisdesat CEO, Miguel Ángel García Primo, emphasized the program’s significance: “This is the most ambitious space initiative undertaken by Spain, born from a Public-Private Partnership with the Spanish Ministry of Defense, and further supported by additional governmental ministries. SpainSat NG, with its state-of-the-art X-Band active antennas, will provide highly secure communications for both the Spanish Armed Forces and our allies in Europe and NATO.”
Lastly, Enrique Granell, the SpainSat NG Project Manager at Airbus, remarked on the project’s legacy: “SpainSat NG is a flagship endeavor for Airbus, symbolizing Europe’s forefront position in secure communications. Advanced collaborative programs like this strengthen Europe's autonomy and expertise in the space arena, ensuring we’re ready for the challenges of tomorrow.”
With the launch of SNG I, Europe is poised to ascend to new heights in secure satellite communication, fostering safety and cooperation on a global scale. Stay tuned for what promises to be an exhilarating chapter in the realm of space technology!
