The River Blackwater Catchment Trust (RBCT) is taking bold steps to combat wildfires that have recently ravaged the Slieve Beagh peatland, particularly after a deliberate blaze destroyed a large area in May.

In an innovative approach, RBCT is testing surveillance drones to monitor the expansive 3,000-hectare bog, with future plans to deploy large agricultural drones equipped to spray water in hard-to-reach fire zones. 'Catching arsonists in action just got easier,' states Roy Spence, the trust's environmental project officer.

Combating Wildfires: A Technological Leap!

Roy emphasizes the challenges of apprehending individuals who start fires in such remote regions. He believes that integrating drone technology with CCTV provides a potent deterrent against these reckless acts. 'It might seem acceptable to some to set fires, but these advancements are changing the game,' he asserts.

Home to endangered species and a crucial carbon sink, Slieve Beagh covers an area of around 9,000 hectares when including its forestry and designated zones. Protecting this vital ecosystem is of utmost importance.

High-Tech Solutions for a Daunting Task!

Starting next year, up to three infrared thermal-imaging drones will patrol the area during peak fire season, taking 5K images of any detected fires. These images will be dispatched to coordinators for rapid assessment, allowing for quick response either to extinguish the blaze or determine if it poses no threat.

Roy describes tackling wildfires in upland settings as "a horrendous job", requiring exhausting treks with heavy water supplies. Drones that can carry up to 100 liters of water provide a pioneering method to combat fires more safely and efficiently.

Roy dreams of a day when drones could autonomously communicate about fires and extinguish them without human intervention. Ideally, this would mean no more wildfires, rendering the water-carrying drones obsolete—a scenario he describes as 'the biggest waste of money ever' in the best way possible.
