According to Pamela Healy, the chief executive of the British Liver Trust, one in three individuals is now at risk of liver disease, with diagnoses surging at an alarming rate.

As Rebecca West, a specialist liver nurse manager at the trust, points out, nearly 90% of liver damage cases are preventable with simple lifestyle adjustments. So, what should you watch out for?

1. Excessive Alcohol Consumption

Many people mistakenly believe they need to be alcohol dependent to face liver diseases. However, regularly exceeding the NHS's recommended limit of 14 units of alcohol per week can significantly heighten your risk of developing liver-related issues, including liver cancer. Alarmingly, in 2022, over 2,700 women died from alcohol-related liver conditions in the UK, marking a staggering 78% increase over the last two decades. The trend is worrying as younger women, even those in their forties, are receiving diagnoses at an increasing rate. To combat this, it is advisable to reduce alcohol intake and reserve at least three alcohol-free days each week.

2. Obesity and Metabolic Disorders

Carrying excess weight, particularly around the abdomen, poses serious threats to liver health. One in five individuals in Britain is estimated to suffer from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular issues. The bright side? Research indicates that lifestyle changes, such as maintaining a balanced diet and regular exercise, can reduce liver fat and even reverse fatty liver disease; aiming to shed 10% of your body weight can yield significant benefits.

3. Viral Hepatitis Awareness

Viral infections like Hepatitis B and C can lead to severe liver damage if untreated, yet many individuals remain unaware of their infection status. Current estimates suggest less than 50% of those living with Hepatitis B have been diagnosed, while over 60,000 people may unknowingly carry chronic Hepatitis C. Both viruses can be transmitted through blood and often exhibit no early symptoms, making testing essential. Effective antiviral treatments are available, so if you suspect exposure or have risk factors, get tested without delay.
