Voyager's Epic Journey
Launched in 1977, the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 spacecraft have redefined our understanding of the solar system. After successfully navigating past Jupiter and Saturn, Voyager 2 boldly ventured to Uranus and Neptune. Both probes boldly crossed into interstellar space, with Voyager 1 hitting this milestone in August 2012 and its twin following in November 2018. Currently, Voyager 1 holds the record at nearly 168 astronomical units (AU) from the Sun, speeding at an impressive 11 miles (18 km) per second.
The Enigmatic Oort Cloud
First theorized in the 1950s by Jan Hendrik Oort, the Oort Cloud is thought to be a vast reservoir of comets, lying over 10,000 AU from the Sun and potentially extending up to 100,000 AU. While we haven't observed this distant cloud directly, many visiting comets are believed to originate from this remote region.
A Comet's Cosmic Playground
Oort estimated that this cloud may hide around 100 billion comet-sized objects, each with a radius of about 6.2 miles (10 km) and a total mass comparable to Earth. However, visualize this: if all those comets were dispersed across the entire area of the Sun, their density would drastically diminish by the time they reached the inner edge of the Oort Cloud, making encounters exceptionally rare.
Probability of Collision Compared to Winning the Lottery
To put it in perspective, imagine the 96 million black styrofoam balls dumped into Los Angeles reservoirs to combat evaporation. If we spread those balls out over the surface of the Earth, the chance of finding one in your garden would roughly equate to winning a lottery jackpot. Incredibly, the odds of Voyager colliding with a comet are 100,000 times lower than even that!
