Bungie Breaks Silence on Marathon
In a surprising turn of events, developer Bungie has provided an update on their highly anticipated sci-fi extraction shooter, Marathon. This comes over a year after the game was unveiled, and while fans are eagerly awaiting more details, the latest news shares exciting insights into character classes and the upcoming playtesting phase expected in 2025.
A Straightforward Approach to Updates
Unlike their usual polished promotional videos, Bungie opted for a straightforward approach this time. Game director Joe Zeigler addressed fans directly in a candid video, reminiscent of a "proof-of-life" update, which aims to assure players that Marathon is indeed progressing through development.
Game Concept and Character Classes
Initially announced in May 2023, Bungie had previously declared they would “go dark” to concentrate on the game. Zeigler confirmed that the studio is still not ready to present gameplay footage but elaborated on the core concept of Marathon. Described as an "intense" extraction shooter, the gameplay will revolve around players competing for loot, attempting to survive, and ultimately escaping with their plunder.
A key highlight from the update was the introduction of two unique character classes within Marathon: the Thief and the Stealth Runner. The Thief class, portrayed in striking concept art as a mysterious figure peering around corners, is expected to bring a mix of suspenseful gameplay and humorous storytelling. Zeigler hinted at the depth of experiences this character will offer, with exhilarating moments and unexpected twists.
On the other hand, the Stealth Runner is designed to be elusive and strategic. Zeigler noted, "They’re really hard to pin down," explaining that this class will utilize deception as a core gameplay mechanic, allowing players to traverse the battlefield stealthily and tactically.
Development Progress and Future Playtesting
In terms of development progress, Zeigler reassured fans that the studio is "on track" with Marathon. He mentioned that feedback from early playtests has led to significant improvements, stating, "There’s so many people who’ve contributed by telling us what works and what doesn’t in a way that has really helped us diagnose and shape the game."
Looking ahead, Bungie plans to expand playtesting invitations in 2025, granting a broader audience the opportunity to experience Marathon first-hand. However, this does not guarantee a launch within the same year, even though it suggests they are approaching the point of revealing gameplay and providing immersive experiences for players.
Bungie's Recent Challenges and Future Prospects
Joe Zeigler, who previously directed Valorant at Riot Games, stepped into the helm at Bungie following the departure of Christopher Barrett, who was reported to have been dismissed from the company.
The past few years have posed challenges for Bungie, particularly with the performance of Destiny 2's 2023 expansion, Lightfall, which fell short of revenue expectations. The studio faced subsequent layoffs, impacting nearly 100 employees. The situation worsened in 2024, leading to hundreds more job losses and the reassignment of 155 staff members to Sony Interactive Entertainment, which acquired Bungie for a staggering $3.6 billion in 2022. Despite these hurdles, Bungie continues to expand its Destiny franchise with new content and a mobile game titled Destiny: Rising.
Release Platforms and Future Expectations
Marathon is set to release on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, and fans have much to look forward to as more information rolls out in the coming years. Will it redefine the extraction shooter genre? Stay tuned for updates as Bungie's ambitious project unfolds!
