Introduction
In an extraordinary display of the universe's wonders, renowned astrophotographer Josh Dury has immortalized a rare alignment of 10 celestial bodies in a breathtaking photograph taken during last weekend’s spectacular planetary parade.
The Celestial Alignment
On February 28, seven planets—Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune—aligned on the same side of the sun, creating a mesmerizing cosmic event. Dury captured this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity from the picturesque Mendip Hills in Somerset, U.K. The next similar alignment won't occur until 2040, making this event especially significant for astronomy enthusiasts.
Dury's Captivating Photograph
Not only did Dury capture the planets, but his photograph also includes the moon and the sun positioned prominently in the foreground, totaling an impressive ten celestial entities in one frame. "The moon was the big contender," Dury noted in an email to Space.com. "What made this photograph tricky was the inclusion of the sun, as well as Saturn and Neptune," which are more subdued in brightness due to their distance from Earth.
The Technical Aspects
Dury explained that not all celestial bodies were visible simultaneously; the images were taken over a 2.5-hour span to seamlessly document the alignment. Utilizing an ultra-wide angle lens, he photographed overlapping sections of the landscape, which were then combined into a stunning panoramic view. The use of HDR blending allowed for the striking range of light to be captured, showcasing the contrasting brightness of the planets.
Visibility of the Planets
Since January, most of the seven planets have been visible in the night sky, with Mercury joining the parade last as it ascended to its peak visibility. Dury cleverly used Mercury as a reference point to locate the relative positions of the other planets and adjusted his exposure settings to perfectly capture both the brighter and dimmer celestial bodies.
Additional Features in the Photograph
Adding to the spectacle, the photo reveals the ethereal zodiacal light—a gentle, white glow extending from the sun—alongside a crystal-clear night sky filled with twinkling stars and two prominent galaxies: the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) and the Triangulum Galaxy (M33).
A Note of Caution
"This alignment of ten celestial bodies is a fleeting moment as Saturn will begin retreating towards the sun after March 2," Dury cautioned. "This makes the event a potentially extraordinary and possibly unprecedented occurrence. I’m truly delighted that the skies were clear, allowing me to document this stellar event from my homeland in the Mendips.”
For Aspiring Stargazers
For those eager to enhance their stargazing experience, the market is brimming with telescopes and binoculars suited for both novice skywatchers and seasoned astrophotographers, promising more celestial wonders to capture in the future.
