Scandal Erupts Over Crab Omelette Pricing
In a shocking twist that has set social media ablaze, Bangkok's famed Michelin-starred chef Jay Fai was hit with a 2,000 baht (S$80) fine after a YouTuber’s complaint exposed a glaring pricing inconsistency at her prestigious restaurant. The controversy revolves around a luxurious crab omelette, which the YouTuber Peachii was charged 4,000 baht for—far above the posted price of 1,500 baht.
YouTuber's Outrage Sparks Investigation
The incident unfolded on August 15 when Peachii shared her disbelief on X (formerly Twitter), revealing that she was unaware she’d ordered a premium version of the dish. Although Jay Fai's restaurant is renowned, the lack of clear communication regarding the pricing left her feeling duped.
A Friend’s Confounding Clarification
Accompanying Peachii was her friend Dr. Pattarapha Chadit, a regular at the renowned eatery. She later explained that the inflated price was meant for ‘VVIPs’—loyal patrons who often enjoy special treatment. Jay Fai personally crafts premium dishes for these favored customers, a detail that Peachii was not made aware of during her visit.
Misunderstandings Resolved
Once Dr. Pattarapha clarified the situation, Peachii took to social media again, humorously stating, “The jigsaw puzzle of the 4,000 baht crab omelette is now complete.” Despite her initial shock, she acknowledged the confusion stemming from the menu’s silence on the premium option.
Authorities Take Action
Following the public uproar, Thai Commerce Minister Jatuporn Buruspat ordered an investigation. On August 20, officials from the Department of Internal Trade (DIT) questioned Jay Fai and revealed the menu failed to specify the 4,000 baht price point. Consequently, Jay Fai was fined and ordered to update her menu.
Jay Fai: A Culinary Icon's Response
Despite the controversy, Jay Fai remains a revered culinary figure in Thailand, celebrated for her extraordinary cooking skills and unique style, which includes wearing ski goggles to shield her eyes from her blazing charcoal stoves. Since earning a Michelin star in 2018, she has transformed from a local celebrity into a global culinary sensation. Fans and diners alike are now eagerly awaiting her restaurant’s next steps in transparency and customer engagement.
