Get ready for an out-of-this-world spectacle! An asteroid comparable in size to a commercial jet is set to make a thrilling near pass by Earth on September 3, and you can catch all the action live online thanks to the Virtual Telescope Project!
Known as 2025 QD8, this intriguing near-Earth asteroid will travel within 135,465 miles (218,009 kilometers) of our planet, which is about 57% of the distance to the moon. You can witness this celestial event at precisely 10:57 a.m. ET (1456 GMT)!
With an estimated diameter of between 55 and 124 feet (17 to 38 meters), 2025 QD8 poses no threat to Earth or the moon during its swift journey, rocketing towards us at an astonishing speed of over 28,000 miles per hour (45,000 km/h).
But that’s not all! The Virtual Telescope Project will kick off a free YouTube live stream starting at 7 p.m. ET (23:00 GMT) on the same day, showcasing stunning live views of the asteroid captured by high-tech robotic telescopes stationed in picturesque Manciano, Italy.
Already making waves, the Virtual Telescope Project successfully snapped a photo of the asteroid on August 30, revealing it as a tiny dot from a staggering distance of approximately 2.4 million miles (3.9 million km). The image, taken with a beloved 17-inch telescope affectionately named “Elena,” showcases the asteroid wandering amidst the distant cosmic giants.
NASA along with its partners has been diligently tracking tens of thousands of asteroids, including many that pose potential threats to Earth. Don't miss your chance to watch a piece of our solar system zoom by – mark your calendars now!
