The future of a historic gem in East Sussex is looking brighter than ever! The Herstmonceux Observatory has secured its place in the cosmos with a brand-new 10-year lease.
This exciting agreement means that The Observatory Science Centre, a charitable initiative by Scientific Projects, will continue to thrive at this iconic site. Once under the purview of the Royal Observatory Greenwich, this Grade II listed treasure has been in the hands of Queen's University in Canada since 1993. It was a generous gift from Alfred Bader, the former owner of the nearby Herstmonceux Castle.
The majestic 15th Century castle, now known as Bader College, serves as an international study centre, marrying education with history.
Welcoming about 60,000 eager visitors each year, the Observatory Science Centre has become an essential part of the local community and a beacon of scientific exploration.
Dr. Matthew Evans, provost of Queen's University, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "This agreement reflects our shared vision to preserve and enhance this unique site. The Observatory Science Centre is integral to the Herstmonceux Castle Estate, and we are excited to collaborate with Science Projects to offer an unparalleled experience for our visitors."
This renewed lease comes on the heels of a proactive campaign by local advocates dedicated to the observatory's sustainability. Members of the Campaign to Save Herstmonceux Observatory Science Centre have rejoiced at the news but remain vigilant in their mission to secure an extended lease, targeting a duration of 50 to 100 years.
As the stars shine brightly above, Herstmonceux Observatory is set to continue its legacy of inspiring wonder and scientific curiosity for years to come!
