10,000 Racegoers Set to Celebrate Singapore Turf Club's Historic Farewell Race on October 5

SINGAPORE – A remarkable farewell is on the horizon for the Singapore Turf Club (STC) as it gears up for one last grand event, the Grand Singapore Gold Cup, on October 5.

This special race day isn't just about horses and betting; it's a heartfelt tribute to Singapore's 182-year racing legacy, and it's expected to draw a crowd of around 10,000 passionate racegoers.

Joining the festivities will be Speaker of Parliament Seah Kian Peng.

Serving as the guest of honour amidst the flurry of activities designed to reminisce about the club's illustrious history. Due to overwhelming demand, all free admission tickets to Grandstand Level 1 have already sold out online, but a few tickets will still be available for on-site redemption during the race days leading up to the event on September 21, 28, and October 5.

The STC has promised an elevated race program.

Featuring ten thrilling races, each accompanied by commemorative activities that celebrate Singapore's racing heritage. Notably, the third race of the day, named the Singapore Turf Club Trophy, is dedicated to STC employees, recognizing their dedication and resilience over the years.

R. Jayaraju, head of the racing tracks, expressed pride in their ability to choose the race’s name collectively.

Emphasizing the meaningful connection employees share with the event. Safety remains paramount, as Jayaraju pointed out the importance of meticulous track maintenance to ensure the well-being of both horses and jockeys during the races.

In addition to the races, attendees will experience an exhibition.

Showcasing winning entries from a recent photo competition organized by STC. Over 200 stunning photographs submitted by both staff and the public, captured during specially organized photo walks, will be on display. The exhibition categories include architecture, flora and fauna, and racing—each telling a unique story about Singapore's diverse culture and heritage.

Racegoers can look forward to a specially curated Heritage Walk.

That outlines the evolution of the Singapore Gold Cup along with informative panels celebrating key milestones, including renowned events like the Kranji Mile and the Singapore Derby.

The Grand Singapore Gold Cup will close out the day’s festivities.

With its prize money significantly increased from $1 million to an impressive $1.38 million, ensuring an exhilarating finale to the storied legacy of horse racing at the Singapore Turf Club. Other races throughout the day will also see a boost in prize money, with notable increases across various events.

With the announcement that STC will cease operations by March 2027.

To make way for housing and new developments, this farewell event is not just a goodbye; it’s a bittersweet celebration of what has been a significant chapter in Singapore's sporting history. News of the closure, shared on June 5, 2023, sparked a wave of emotions in the racing community, as it marked the end of an era for horse racing in Singapore.

Officials from the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of National Development revealed that the decision comes in light of declining spectator numbers over the years.

And redevelopment plans aim to better utilize the land for future community needs.
