Wake Forest University Football Coach Dave Clawson Resigns After Historic Tenure

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – In a surprising move that has sent ripples through the college football community, Dave Clawson has announced his resignation as head coach of the Wake Forest Demon Deacons football team, effective immediately. Clawson, who took the reins of the program in December 2013, leaves behind a remarkable legacy as one of the most influential figures in the history of Wake Forest Athletics.

During his 11 seasons at the helm, Clawson transformed the Demon Deacons into a formidable competitor, leading the team to the most successful era in its history. His tenure was highlighted by an impressive streak of seven consecutive bowl appearances from 2016 to 2022, an Atlantic Division title in 2021, and the program's unprecedented achievement of attaining top-10 national rankings in back-to-back seasons (2021 & 2022).

Under Clawson's guidance, Wake Forest not only excelled on the scoreboard but also maintained high academic standards, gaining national acclaim for the student-athletes’ performance in the classroom. This dual commitment to athletics and academics is a testament to Clawson's holistic approach to coaching, which emphasizes the development of well-rounded individuals.

While his achievements on the field are noteworthy, Clawson’s impact stretches beyond victories. He is the only coach in NCAA Division I history to secure at least 10 wins in a season with four different programs: Fordham, Richmond, Bowling Green, and Wake Forest. Clawson's unique ability to foster talent has led to unprecedented success, allowing numerous players to advance to the NFL. A record 13 former Demon Deacons were on NFL rosters during the 2023 and 2024 seasons, with standout quarterback Sam Hartman shattering multiple career records, including those for touchdown passes in the ACC.

“I have poured my heart and soul into Wake Forest, and stepping away is by no means an easy decision,” Clawson remarked. “This university is filled with exceptional individuals, and I am deeply thankful for the incredible relationships fostered during my time here. Together, we have achieved what many deemed impossible, and I leave knowing that we have built something truly special.”

Wake Forest President Susan R. Wente expressed her gratitude, stating, "Dave Clawson has exemplified our motto of Pro Humanitate, making significant contributions both on and off the field. His leadership has elevated our football program, and we wish him and his family the very best as they embark on this new chapter."

While Clawson’s departure marks the end of an era, it also initiates a new beginning for both him and Wake Forest. He will transition to a new role as Special Advisor to the Vice President and Director of Athletics, John Currie.

As the program gears up for this significant change, Currie has assured fans and student-athletes alike of a thorough search for the new head coach. “Our student-athletes will remain our top priority during this transition, and we are dedicated to providing them with unwavering support.”

The search for Clawson’s successor begins now, as Wake Forest aims to build upon the successful foundation laid by Clawson and continue ascending the ranks of college football. Fans and alumni alike are abuzz with curiosity over who will take the reins of this storied program next.
