In a heart-wrenching incident, Cori Clingman from Upper Marlboro, Maryland, has been arrested and charged with DUI and vehicular manslaughter following a crash that took the lives of three promising young men. The Maryland State Police launched an investigation after the tragic event that occurred on July 6, 2024, on Route 4-Pennsylvania Avenue.
"This was a horrific tragedy that should not have occurred," stated Aisha Braveboy, Prince George's County State's Attorney, during a news conference announcing the charges against Clingman. The prosecutors allege that Clingman, while driving under the influence, collided head-on with a Dodge Charger and a Chevrolet Impala, leading to the devastating results.
The three victims, all friends and former teammates from Wise High School, were Isaiah Hazel, 23, and Anthony Lytton Jr., 24, both from Upper Marlboro, and Khyree Jackson, 24, of Waldorf. Khyree had recently been drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, marking the beginning of a bright career that was tragically cut short. The impact of the collision was severe, and while the driver of the Chevrolet Impala escaped unharmed, the loss of the three young men has reverberated throughout their community.
Braveboy emphasized the enormity of the loss: "These were three young men who had their lives ahead of them, with amazing, bright futures and aspirations... but on July 6, they were taken away from us." A grand jury has indicted Clingman on 13 counts, which include grossly negligent and criminally negligent vehicular manslaughter, alongside multiple charges related to driving under the influence of alcohol.
Following the collision, community members expressed their sorrow, with a Minnesota Vikings hat poignantly placed near the crash site in memory of the young men. Despite not having played an official game for the Vikings, Jackson’s legacy was honored significantly. Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell spoke at the joint funeral for Jackson and Hazel, remarking on Jackson's dedication to being a good teammate and his commitment to hard work for a greater purpose.
The Vikings organization also paid tribute, adorning their helmets with KJ decals as a reminder of Jackson’s vibrant spirit and potential.
This tragic event has ignited conversations about the reckless behavior linked to DUI driving, prompting authorities and community leaders to advocate for stricter measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future. As the community continues to mourn the three lives lost, families and friends are determined to seek justice and ensure that such a devastating incident does not happen again.
