Amnesty International Takes a Stand for Hong Kong’s Human Rights

In a bold move, Amnesty International has unveiled plans for a new office dedicated to Hong Kong, operating "in exile" to continue its fight for human rights amidst Beijing's increasing repression. This comes after the organization was forced to shut its previous offices in the region back in 2021 due to a stringent security law that stifled freedom of expression.

A Symbol of Resilience Amidst Suppression

Amnesty's Secretary-General, Agnes Callamard, emphasized the significance of the new office, stating it embodies the organization's resilience and unwavering commitment to human rights advocacy, despite formidable challenges. "We will not be silenced," she proclaimed.

Office Operated by Hong Kong Activists Abroad

Officially registered in Switzerland, the newly formed section, Amnesty International Hong Kong Overseas (AIHKO), will be managed by Hong Kong activists residing in countries such as Australia, Canada, Taiwan, Britain, and the US. This unique setup is the first of its kind for Amnesty, operating entirely from abroad.

Greater Freedom to Advocate and Connect Globally

Fernando Cheung, a former Hong Kong lawmaker and current board member of AIHKO, noted that operating outside of Hong Kong allows for greater freedom to act and connect with international organizations. He remarked on the deteriorating human rights situation in Hong Kong, where authorities have systematically cracked down on dissent since the pro-democracy protests erupted in 2019.

The Grim Reality in Hong Kong

Since the 1997 handover from British rule, fears of diminished civil liberties have driven many to emigrate. The recent introduction of a national security law has only intensified these fears, criminalizing actions deemed subversive. Amnesty International reported that over 322 individuals have been arrested under this law, and more than 10,000 have faced arrests related to protests since 2019.

Amplifying Voices and Building Community

The mission of AIHKO is clear: to advocate for the rights of Hongkongers both within the region and in the global arena, ensuring that their voices resonate loud and clear amidst the current climate of oppression. As it moves forward, Amnesty International remains steadfast in its pursuit of a freer, more just world.
