In a surprising turn of events, TMZ has publicly apologized for what they described as "tone deaf" laughter during a livestream that announced the tragic death of Charlie Kirk.
During their coverage of the shocking shooting incident at Utah Valley University, the livestream unexpectedly showcased laughter and applause just moments before host Harvey Levin and executive producer Charles Latibeaudiere broke the news of Kirk's passing.
Levin quickly clarified that the laughter was not directed at the death of the 31-year-old founder of Turning Point USA. Instead, it stemmed from a police chase occurring in Los Angeles, where a suspect notably switched vehicles mid-pursuit.
In an apology video alongside Latibeaudiere, Levin expressed remorse for the unfortunate timing of the laughter.
"We were livestreaming all day during this tragedy, and while reporting on the assassination of Charlie Kirk, some staffers were watching a car chase happening in the background," he explained, seeking to separate the two events.
Latibeaudiere added, "We acknowledge that it was horrible timing. We assure you, [the laughter] was not about that."
Following the incident, TMZ reiterated their apology in a written statement, aiming to clarify the context.
"The laughter was in reaction to the car chase, but we want to make it clear... they were not cheering in response to the assassination," the message read, linking to an article detailing the car chase.
"Nonetheless, watching a car chase at that moment was utterly tone deaf, and the sounds of laughter were completely out of line. We sincerely apologize to anyone who was affected by this during such a tragic moment."
