In a stunning twist to the ongoing crisis, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has stepped down amid escalating unrest in Nepal—marked by the tragic deaths of 19 protesters during clashes with police.

On Tuesday, chaos erupted in Kathmandu as enraged crowds ignited fires at the parliament building, sending massive plumes of black smoke thickening the sky. As violence spread, government properties and homes of political leaders were targeted across the nation.

Tragedy struck again with reports of three more fatalities on Tuesday. During the turmoil, officials revealed that a staggering 900 inmates escaped from two prisons in the western districts of Nepal—a sign of the escalating mayhem.

The protests were initially sparked by a ban on social media platforms, which, although lifted on Monday, had already fueled a massive surge of public outrage.

With the prime minister's resignation creating a leadership vacuum, uncertainty reigns. Some political leaders have reportedly sought refuge with security forces, while the future remains uncertain.

Though the protests are largely leaderless, the crowd is united under a common banner: anti-corruption. Inside the parliament building, jubilant scenes unfolded as hundreds danced and chanted slogans, waving Nepali flags and surrounding a blaze at the entrance.

Twenty-year-old Muna Shreshta, among the throngs outside parliament, expressed her hope for change: "It has happened now and we are more than happy to witness this and fight for this... We need a transformation that drives our country forward."

The government's recent measures included a ban on 26 social media platforms, aiming to tackle fake news and hate speech, but young people condemned it as an infringement on free expression.

Despite the ban being lifted, demonstrations surged, maintaining their momentum and targeting the ruling elite. The past weeks have seen a notable rise in the "nepo kid" campaign, which draws attention to the ostentatious lifestyles of politicians' children amidst corruption allegations.

On Monday, thousands attempted to storm the parliament, leading many districts to impose curfews. Most casualties occurred during these clashes.

As unrest continued into Tuesday, protesters set fire to the headquarters of the Nepali Congress Party and targeted the homes of its leaders, including that of former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and of KP Oli himself.

In a resignation letter addressed to President Ramchandra Paudel, Oli expressed his intention to facilitate a constitutional solution to the turmoil enveloping the nation. President Paudel has acknowledged the resignation and has initiated discussions for a new leadership in this precarious political landscape.
