In a chilling moment at Daikin Park, Los Angeles Angels outfielder Taylor Ward was carted off the field following a catastrophic collision with the scoreboard during a game against the Houston Astros.
During the eighth inning of the Angels’ victorious 3-0 showdown, emotions ran high when Ward sprinted back to catch a towering hit from Astros second baseman Ramon Urías. Unfortunately, he crashed face-first into the metal scoreboard, collapsing to the ground as the ball rolled away.
Remarkably, Ward managed to get back on his feet but quickly sought help, blood streaming from a cut above his right eye. Urías ended up with a double, but the real concern was for Ward, who was later transported to a local hospital.
"He hit the wall pretty hard," said interim manager Ray Montgomery, confirming that while Ward’s right eye looked fine, he did need stitches for the cut.
The incident has sparked outrage, particularly among Ward's teammates. Fellow outfielder Jo Adell expressed his anger about the hazardous scoreboard placement. Adell himself suffered an injury from the same wall in 2021, and he didn't hold back in criticizing the stadium's design.
"It's ridiculous to have a metal scoreboard so close to the ground in the big leagues," Adell fumed. "Players are out there giving their all, and they shouldn’t have to worry about running into a wall like that. I know personally what it's like to be sidelined from something so preventable."
As for Ward, this season has been noteworthy for him, boasting a .228 batting average, along with a career-high 30 home runs and 94 RBIs. The Angels, now sitting at 64-72, remain fourth in the AL West, desperately trying to claw their way back into the wild-card conversation.
The Angels will continue their four-game series against the Astros on Monday, with hopes that Ward's injuries are not as severe as they initially appeared.
