Shocking Plunge in Retail Sales: September Figures Reveal Major Declines!
In a surprising turn of events, retail sales have taken a significant hit, plummeting to $29.6 billion in September 2024. This marks a staggering 6.9% drop compared to the same month last year, indicating a troubling trend for the retail sector.
Breaking down the numbers, online sales accounted for 10.4% of the total, equating to $3.1 billion. However, this figure also reflects a sharp decline of 11.8% from September 2023, raising concerns about the shifting dynamics of consumer purchasing behaviors.

The hardest-hit category was "motor vehicles and parts," which experienced an alarming 26.7% decrease year-over-year. Other sectors weren’t spared either, with significant declines observed in:
- Jewellery, watches, and clocks: down 17.9% - Electrical goods and durable consumer goods: down 7.6% - Food, alcoholic drinks, and tobacco: down 3.2% - Apparel: down 8.7% - Medicines and cosmetics: down 2.5% - Department store commodities: down 11.4% - Fuels: down 8.6% - Furniture and fixtures: down 14.4% - Footwear and clothing accessories: down 3.8% - Chinese herbs and drugs: down 17.7% - Optical shops: down 10.6%
Amid the gloom, there were a couple of bright spots. Sales of "other consumer goods not elsewhere classified" saw a modest increase of 2.9%, while "books, newspapers, stationery, and gifts" surged by an impressive 20.3%.
According to the Census & Statistics Department (C&SD), there is a notable shift in consumption patterns among residents and tourists that is impacting retail performance. A government spokesperson stated, “Despite the current challenges, the outlook for the Mainland economy appears to improve with the introduction of several stimulus measures. Additionally, a potential easing of the Hong Kong dollar in relation to the US dollar due to anticipated US interest rate cuts could reinvigorate consumer sentiment and spending in the near future.
As retailers scramble to adapt to these massive changes, many are left wondering: How will these trends evolve, and what does the future hold for the retail landscape? Stay tuned for the latest updates!
