The Defender Kentucky week kicked off with unexpected drama as 35 hopefuls in the CCI5* category presented themselves to the esteemed Ground Jury, led by Christian Steiner of Austria, along with judges Anne-Mette Binder from Denmark and Peter Gray from Canada.
Among the contenders was Jennie Brannigan with Tim and Nina Gardner's beloved horse, Twilightsgleam, affectionately known as "Comic" or "Grandpa." This was set to be Comic's sixth 5* competition, but things took a heartbreaking turn when he was sent back for a re-inspection. After a prolonged deliberation, the jury made the tough call to withdraw the 15-year-old Thoroughbred from competition.
An emotional Jennie shared her thoughts: "I love this horse dearly, and he has given me so much. He doesn’t owe us anything, but if he isn’t right, we wouldn’t dream of pushing him. We've faced challenges with his feet over the years, and as a responsible horseman, it’s tough to come to terms with being spun at a jog. The most crucial thing is there will always be another horse show, but there will never be another Grandpa. The Gardners are incredible owners who prioritize his health and happiness. He’s my heart horse, and I won’t risk his well-being for competition."
Fortunately, the remaining horses passed inspection without any hiccups. All 34 horses that qualified are set to compete in dressage, kicking off tomorrow afternoon.
