Cyberpunk 2077 has made waves since its release, but I’ve finally found my favorite platform to play it: the Switch 2. After trying this expansive game on various systems, this handheld has stolen my gaming heart, and I can't believe how seamlessly it allows me to dive deep into Night City.
A New Standard for Portable Gaming
Sure, you can play Cyberpunk 2077 in stunning detail on the Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5, but neither offers the fluidity and comfort I experienced with the Switch 2. Playing docked gives a stable gaming experience, enhanced by the superior controls of Joy-Con 2. With joystick and gyro capabilities, aiming becomes a breeze, and the option for mouse controls elevates the intensity of combat to a new level. Imagine enjoying dynamic, pulse-pounding action from the comfort of your couch without the hassle of a keyboard!
Innovative Controls for Precision
In my 15 hours of gameplay, I tested various control schemes in handheld mode, finding the mouse controls precise yet tricky on my hands. Thankfully, using Dbrand's Killswitch case grip made a world of difference in ergonomics. However, switching between actions and menus often required awkward hand movements that could cramp up your wrist—definitely something to consider if you're gearing up for lengthy sessions.
The Mixed Blessing of Motion Controls
Cyberpunk 2077 also features interesting hand gestures for weapon reloads and melee swings, reminiscent of early Wii games. Unfortunately, these felt more like a gamble than a reliable mechanic. I ultimately preferred button commands for a more cohesive experience. It’s also a missed opportunity that you can't use gyro controls alongside mouse options; Metroid Prime 4: Beyond sets a great precedent by allowing players to seamlessly switch control methods.
Visuals that Impress, But Not Without Flaws
Running at 1080p in both handheld and docked modes, the game maintains an impressive frame rate that fluctuates between 30 to 40 fps. This level of performance holds up even in chaotic combat scenarios. While you might encounter occasional frame drops—especially in busy environments—the visuals are enough to keep you enchanted. However, if you live for a constant 60 fps experience, you might find the Switch 2 lacking.
A Beautiful Yet Flawed World
Despite minor visual glitches, Cyberpunk 2077 remains a benchmark in graphic fidelity five years post-launch. The rich, immersive world created by CD Projekt Red is a testament to how storytelling and environment design can engage players on multiple levels. From every discarded item to stunning skyline views, Night City is alive with depth and detail that captivates and immerses.
In short, the Switch 2 has redefined my experience with Cyberpunk 2077, proving its place as a must-have platform for any aspiring Night City explorer!
