A new, groundbreaking study has unveiled two key lifestyle changes that can dramatically reduce your cancer risk—maintaining a healthy weight and engaging in regular exercise. Conducted with over 315,000 participants, this research, funded by the World Cancer Research Fund, is the first of its kind to explore how these factors work together in cancer prevention.
According to the study, individuals who adhere to the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for waist circumference—keeping it under 88cm for women and 102cm for men—and who maintain adequate exercise levels significantly lower their cancer risk compared to those who don't meet either guideline.
The WHO recommends at least 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week, or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity. What does that look like in real life? Moderate activities may include brisk walking, heavy cleaning, cycling at a speed of 10-12 mph, or playing badminton. On the other hand, vigorous activities consist of jogging, basketball, tennis, or even a game of football.
The results were startling. Over an average follow-up period of 11 years, nearly 30,000 participants developed cancer, with researchers finding that those not meeting waist circumference guidelines had an 11% increased risk of developing the disease. Even individuals with healthy waist sizes who failed to exercise increased their cancer risk by 4%. Those who neglected both guidelines experienced a staggering 15% increase in their risk.
The team, publishing their findings in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, stressed the importance of adopting a holistic lifestyle approach for effective cancer prevention. Dr. Helen Croker, an expert from the World Cancer Research Fund, emphasized that focusing solely on one factor is insufficient to combat cancer risks.
“Integrating healthy dietary choices along with physical activity and waist management is crucial,” she explained. "Start small—integrate movement into your daily life, opt for healthier meals, and watch the difference accumulate over time.”
Lead researcher, Professor Michael Leitzmann from the University of Regensburg, expressed excitement over their findings regarding waist circumference and physical activity, revealing that addressing multiple factors collectively has a greater impact on health.
In light of this study, awareness is rising around the link between waist circumference and other health complications. A separate WHO report highlighted that women with a waist measurement above 80cm and men above 94cm face heightened risks of metabolic disorders like type 2 diabetes. Risk escalates notably above the 88cm and 102cm thresholds, respectively.
Moreover, this urgency is underscored by Cancer Research UK's recent commitment of £10 million towards creating advanced AI tools aimed at enhancing early cancer detection and prevention strategies. These innovations could allow doctors to predict an individual's cancer risk more accurately and tailor personalized health interventions.
Through the Cancer Data-Driven Detection program, data integration from diverse sources—health records, genomics, family histories, and lifestyle choices—will enable advanced predictive modeling of cancer risks.
