The Las Vegas Raiders are hitting the reset button yet again. Following the dismissal of head coach Antonio Pierce, general manager Tom Telesco has also been let go, marking another significant leadership change for the franchise.
Initially, it seemed that Telesco would retain his position after just one season with the Raiders. However, after discussing the team's future with owner Mark Davis and minority owner Tom Brady, the decision was made to pursue a fresh start for both the GM and head coach roles.
According to insiders, the motivation for this change is to establish a unified vision moving forward. The new general manager and head coach will ideally work together from day one, setting a cooperative timeline for rebuilding the team.
The Raiders are already in the process of interviewing candidates. On the agenda is a virtual discussion with Ben Johnson, the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions. Additionally, Robert Saleh, a former head coach of the New York Jets, is being considered for an interview as well. Other notable candidates include Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, and Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken.
This will mark the third consecutive offseason in which the Raiders are searching for a new GM and head coach, underscoring the turbulence surrounding the franchise. The person who takes the reins as GM will be the fifth to serve under Davis since he became the controlling owner in 2011.
Here are ten candidates the Raiders could consider for their general manager position:
1. John Spytek (Buccaneers Assistant GM)
Spytek played a key role in acquiring pivotal players for Tampa Bay's Super Bowl-winning squad, including Tom Brady. With a solid track record in player transactions and scouting, he is seen as a prospective candidate who could attract fresh talent to the Raiders.
2. Ryan Cowden (Giants Executive Advisor)
Previously the interim GM for the Titans, Cowden has demonstrated potential in building competitive teams. His connection with former Titans head coach Mike Vrabel could add synergy should they reunite in Las Vegas.
3. Ryan Grigson (Vikings Senior VP Player Personnel)
Once the GM for the Colts, Grigson has revamped his reputation with the Vikings. Known for his strategic knowledge, he’s developed significant connections within the league that could be beneficial for the Raiders.
4. Terrance Gray (Bills Director of Player Personnel)
With a strong focus on scouting and player development, Gray has been integral to the Bills’ recent successes. His experience in both college and pro scouting makes him a versatile candidate.
5. Ian Cunningham (Bears Assistant GM)
Cunningham has been a candidate for various GM openings and brings experience from championship teams like the Ravens and Eagles. His arrival could bring valuable expertise to the Raiders.
6. Josh Williams (49ers Director of Scouting)
With a strong background in both collegiate and professional scouting, Williams has been pivotal in the 49ers’ successful recent drafts. His youthful energy may infuse new ideas into Raiders operations.
7. Mike Borgonzi (Chiefs Assistant GM)
Borgonzi's sustained success with the Chiefs thanks to his deep knowledge of roster construction could provide an edge for the Raiders, especially in a highly competitive AFC West division.
8. Champ Kelly (Raiders Assistant GM)
Having served as the interim GM, Kelly possesses familiarity with the team's structure and players. With a hopeful outlook for leadership, Kelly's internal promotion could signal continuity amid the transition.
9. Trey Brown (Bengals Senior Personnel Executive)
Brown, who helped elevate the Bengals into contenders, could bring that same energy to Las Vegas. His experience in dramatic team turnarounds makes him an attractive option for a franchise seeking revitalization.
10. Lance Newmark (Commanders Assistant GM)
Newmark played an instrumental role in transforming the Commanders from a struggling team to playoff contenders in one season. His extensive experience in player personnel could help the Raiders craft a more competitive roster.
As the Raiders embark on this new journey, the selection of a general manager who aligns with the team's vision will be critical in determining the franchise's future success.
