Ollanta Humala: A Fall from Grace

The former president of Peru, Ollanta Humala, has been convicted of money laundering and slapped with a hefty 15-year prison sentence. This shocking decision was reached by a court in Lima, revealing how he allegedly accepted illicit funds from the late Venezuelan leader Hugo Chávez and the notorious Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht to fund his electoral campaigns in 2006 and 2011.

A Disturbing Legacy

Humala isn't alone in this political debacle. His wife, Nadine Heredia, has also been found guilty of the same charges and received a matching sentence of 15 years. However, in a dramatic twist, she managed to escape and has sought asylum in Brazil, securing passage from the Peruvian government after entering the Brazilian embassy with their child, just before authorities could apprehend her.
