Major NBA Trade: Hornets Send Nick Richards to Suns in Multi-Pick Deal!

In an exciting development for the NBA, the Phoenix Suns have officially acquired center Nick Richards from the Charlotte Hornets, alongside a second-round draft pick, in exchange for Josh Okogie and three additional second-round selections. As part of the trade, the Suns are parting with their 2025 second-round pick, which is expected to be the least favorable of the picks originally held by Denver and Philadelphia. In 21 games this season, he is averaging 8.9 points, 7.5 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 1.2 blocks in around 21 minutes of play per game. His team-friendly contract, which pays him $5 million this season with a non-guaranteed $5 million for next season, makes him a valuable asset for the Suns.

The Suns, looking to reduce their projected luxury tax bill significantly, are also parting with Okogie, who earns $8.25 million this season. The change is expected to save Phoenix about $20 million in taxes, while still bringing in an athletic center to enhance their frontcourt options. Following his transition to the team, Richards is anticipated to step into the starting center role as he adjusts to the Suns' system.

Rumors surrounding the trade negotiations suggested that Jusuf Nurkic of the Suns was initially in the mix, but the Hornets opted not to take on his more substantial contract. Instead, swapping out Okogie for Richards proved to be a simpler solution for both teams, meeting salary cap requirements and enabling strategic maneuvering for the Suns.

In light of their position above the second tax apron, the Suns had limited flexibility in the trade market, making this deal a practical option. Alongside the acquisition of Richards, the Suns will gain a $3.25 million trade exception through this transaction that can be utilized this season.

On the other side, the Hornets have also benefited from this trade, successfully acquiring three additional second-round picks while freeing up some cap space. Charlotte's strategy mirrors their earlier decision to absorb contracts in exchange for draft assets, giving them the opportunity to pivot again before the upcoming trade deadline on February 6.

Although the Hornets are primarily focused on maximizing their future draft capital, it is worth noting that Okogie could still be an asset for them. The versatile swingman has shown promise this season, averaging 6.0 points and 2.9 rebounds with impressive shooting percentages of 49.1% from the field and 38.1% from beyond the arc. If Okogie isn’t part of the team’s long-term plans, the Hornets might consider trade options for him as well.
