Housing Bureau Unveils New Contracts for Light Public Housing
In a groundbreaking announcement, the Housing Bureau (HB) has awarded operation and management contracts for the highly anticipated Light Public Housing (LPH) projects. This initiative, aimed at increasing affordable housing options, is set to deliver thousands of new units to the people of Hong Kong.
Major Contracts Awarded to Leading Firms
On September 4, the HB revealed that the fifth and sixth contracts (LPH20250002 and LPH20250003) have been granted to Chevalier Property Management Limited and Sik Sik Yuen Joint Venture, as well as to Creative Property Services Consultants Limited and Pok Oi Hospital. The contracts are valued at approximately $86 million and $123 million, respectively.
Transforming Schools into Homes
The fifth contract encompasses four LPH projects converting former school premises into residential units. Completions are organized in two phases: The first phase includes the conversion of the Mission Covenant Church Holm Glad No. 2 Primary School and the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Ma Kam Chan Memorial Primary School, delivering about 240 units by the end of this year. The second phase will follow, featuring additional projects expected to be finished by early 2027.
Meanwhile, the sixth contract focuses on a significant project on Sheung On Street in Chai Wan, promising around 1,720 units to be ready by mid-next year.
Housing Secretary Highlights the Initiative's Success
Housing Secretary Ms. Winnie Ho expressed her enthusiasm, stating, "The successful intake at past LPH projects shows the strong demand for affordable rent and quality living conditions. We are ready to deliver more units to meet the needs of residents looking for a better quality of life." She also encouraged more organizations to join in, enhancing support for grassroots citizens.
More Than Just Housing: Comprehensive Community Services
The LPH projects are designed not only to provide shelter but also to create a supportive community. This includes vital social services and facilities aimed at improving the overall quality of life for residents. The HB is ensuring high service standards by thoroughly evaluating the management capabilities and innovative proposals from participating firms.
A Massive Response to Housing Needs
The Chief Executive highlighted the construction of around 30,000 LPH units, with promises of 9,500 units completed this year, followed by an additional 20,000 next year, culminating in the final batch expected by 2027. With more than 26,400 applications for LPH already received, eligible individuals are urged to apply quickly to improve their living situations.
What This Means for Hong Kong's Future
This bold step by the Housing Bureau is not just about building structures—it's about transforming lives. The initiative to convert schools into homes, coupled with comprehensive living support services, signifies a renewed commitment to addressing housing challenges in one of the world's most densely populated cities. As these projects take shape, many can look forward to brighter tomorrows.
