In a recent interview with CNBC, Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two Interactive, expressed confidence that the highly anticipated GTA 6 will not face further delays beyond its newly announced release date of May 26, 2026.
Zelnick stated, "My level of conviction is very, very high," emphasizing Rockstar's commitment to surpassing gamers' expectations with this next installment. He highlighted that Rockstar is known for setting extraordinary benchmarks and aiming to exceed them, building excitement around the game's launch.
While Rockstar has a strong focus on delivering a phenomenal experience with GTA 6, Zelnick reiterated the importance of patience, mentioning that perfection takes time. He stated, "While I couldn't be more optimistic than I am, we all have to do the work. We have to deliver something great to consumers, and then the consumers will tell us just how great it is."
Originally slated for a Fall 2025 release, GTA 6 was pushed to 2026, a move that’s not surprising given Rockstar's history of game delays. However, insiders report that the initial date may not have been based on solid plans.
Aside from GTA 6, Zelnick hinted at multiple other projects in the works at Rockstar, though he kept details under wraps. Speculations suggest that fans could see a remastered version of GTA 4 and a port of Red Dead Redemption II for the upcoming Switch 2. Additionally, new versions of Red Dead Redemption II for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are rumored to be in development.
As for release timings, these anticipated titles may drop in late 2025, and there is also news of Rockstar collaborating with Remedy on remakes of the classic Max Payne 1 and 2 games.
Expectations for GTA 6 are sky-high, with projections estimating it could sell 40 million copies within its first year alone. Additionally, a later release for PC is anticipated, which could spark a second wave of sales for this engaging open-world adventure.
Despite the shift to 2026 being a blow to the gaming industry, analysts predict that 2025 will still deliver exciting titles, with Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and Battlefield 6 making their debut—marking the first year in five where both franchises have new entries.
