New Alliance to Tackle Athlete Abuse
In a groundbreaking partnership announced Tuesday, the NCAA has joined forces with the popular payment service Venmo to combat the alarming rise of harassment directed at college athletes. Reports reveal that many athletes have been inundated with unwanted money requests from disgruntled bettors and solicitations for inside information.
Dedicated Support for Athletes
This innovative collaboration introduces a dedicated hotline exclusively for athletes to report cases of abuse and harassment, alongside educational initiatives focused on securing their account information. Venmo's security team will be actively monitoring pertinent social media trends and incidents during games—especially crucial moments like missed field goals—to catch surges in hostile interactions.
Shocking Stats on Online Abuse
Research from the NCAA highlights a staggering trend: nearly 20% of online abuse targeting college basketball and football players relates to sports betting. Athletes have reported troubling instances of gamblers sending them payment requests after losing bets connected to their performance.
A Call for Integrity
Clint Hangebrauck, NCAA's managing director of enterprise risk management, shared with ESPN that the solicitation for inside scoops is particularly concerning. "We’ve encountered requests like, 'Hey, will you let me know if you're playing? I'll send you money.' This poses a serious integrity threat for us," he emphasized.
Venmo's Commitment to Safety
David Szuchman, senior vice president at Venmo's parent company PayPal, acknowledged that while these unsolicited requests are infrequent, they remain "unacceptable." He underscored that college athletes deserve elevated protection due to their unique status on the platform.
Zero Tolerance for Abuse
"We rigidly uphold our policies against harassment or abuse," Szuchman stated. "If we detect any illicit activity, we are legally obligated to report it to law enforcement." He added that Venmo is committed to understanding the dynamics of unwanted interactions affecting student-athletes, ensuring appropriate measures are taken.
An Unmatched Experience for Student-Athletes
Athletes at both college and professional levels have vocalized their experiences with unsavory payment requests on Venmo—a platform without similar partnerships with any other sports leagues. While the app enables users to share transactions publicly, many college athletes prefer to keep their interactions private, fearing harassment.
Normalcy Amidst Challenges
Hangebrauck noted, "These students want to experience life as typical college kids—sharing expenses for pizza or movie outings. Yet they also require heightened safeguards to navigate their unique challenges efficiently."
Setting a Precedent for Future Collaborations
Hangebrauck expressed hope that this partnership serves as a template for other social media platforms to recognize and deal with the harassment issues faced by athletes. "This initiative could pave the way for broader outreach and enhancement of safety measures across various platforms," he concluded.
