Gérard Depardieu Faces 18-Month Suspended Sentence Over Sexual Assault Allegations

In a dramatic courtroom showdown, the Paris prosecutor’s office has sought an 18-month suspended prison sentence for renowned actor Gérard Depardieu, following allegations of sexual assault during a film shoot in 2021. Alongside the suspended sentence, a three-year probation period and a fine of €20,000 (approximately $21,500) have also been proposed. Additionally, authorities have recommended that Depardieu undergo psychological treatment and be added to France’s sex offenders list.

This hearing marked a significant point in a troubling saga involving Depardieu, who has faced at least 20 public allegations of inappropriate conduct throughout his career. This trial specifically stemmed from accusations made by a set dresser and a third assistant director during the filming of Jean Becker’s The Green Shutters, where the incidents allegedly occurred.

Compounding his legal troubles, Depardieu is also poised to face a second trial in the near future concerning rape allegations by actress Charlotte Arnould from as far back as 2018. The Paris Prosecutor’s Office is actively pursuing this case as it navigates through the judicial system. Depardieu has consistently denied all accusations against him.

During the trial, the set dresser, who identified herself as Amélie, detailed alarming interactions with Depardieu, claiming he physically restrained her and made explicit sexual comments. Another witness, known only as Sarah, echoed similar experiences, recounting unwanted physical contact while on set with the actor.

In his defense, Depardieu argued that, at 76 years old, he is “not into groping” and suggested that his actions were misconstrued, professing no sexual intent. Despite his claims, numerous testimonies from women—some who did not press charges—paint a concerning picture of Depardieu’s behavior. For instance, one actress described an intrusive incident during a photocall for the Netflix series Marseille.

Fanny Ardant, a veteran actress who co-starred with Depardieu in films like The Women Next Door and Hello Goodbye, took the stand to vouch for him, acknowledging his complexities yet also citing his extraordinary talent as an actor.

In pursuit of justice, prosecutor Laurent Guy emphasized the consistency of the plaintiffs' testimonies, contrasting them with what he described as Depardieu's fluctuating account of events. "We also have three eyewitnesses to the gestures made against Amélie at the crucial moment. This undoubtedly constitutes sexual assault," he asserted.

As the French legal system gears up for its decision, the potential repercussions hang heavily over Depardieu, who could face a maximum of five years in prison and a hefty €75,000 ($81,000) fine.
