"You’re just escaping and just going to nowhere," she emotionaly shared via phone with CNN. "I wake up crying and I go to sleep crying. My dreams have turned into a living nightmare."

After enduring a relentless struggle in Gaza, her admission to an American university symbolized a glimmer of hope, a respite from her harsh reality. However, this dream was abruptly shattered due to a new policy from the Trump administration that targets Palestinian Authority passport holders, effectively barring them from securing non-immigrant visas.

This student witnessed unimaginable trauma just weeks after the latest outbreak of conflict, recalling the harrowing moment her brother was injured in an Israeli airstrike. "Bombs were everywhere," she recounted, using her experiences as motivation to push forward. "You can’t afford to pause; you have to keep planning every moment of your life."

Unyielding Aspirations Amid Adversity

For many Palestinian students like her, the new visa restrictions have felt like the final nail in the coffin of their aspirations. Emotional anguish reverberated among peers, as dreams of studying abroad appeared to collapse overnight. Yet, this student remains undeterred, stating, "This isn't the end. We Palestinians will not give up."

As she embarks on a new journey to southern Gaza, she ensures her university applications are safely stored on Google Drive, considering alternatives for studies outside of the U.S. While a glimmer of hope still lingers for potential policy changes, the State Department has provided no signs of reconsideration.

A fellow student, who faced life-threatening risks to submit her application for a PhD in physics, detailed her ordeal of reaching a remote border area to find a weak internet signal amid bombings. "The process could have literally cost me my life," she revealed.

For many families, pursuing education represents safety and a brighter future. One pharmacist shared the dreams of his children, who eagerly anticipated traveling to the U.S., while facing immense barriers in securing his master's degree back home amid chaos.

Now, many Palestinian students are left uncertain, facing a potential delay of three years before they can pursue their academic ambitions abroad. Having last attended school during the fall of 2023, they are forced to restart their applications, seeking opportunities beyond American borders.

"These are individuals striving to finish their education despite bombardment and displacement. It’s utterly disheartening," Majid concluded. The struggles continue, but the spirit of resilience among these students remains unbroken.
