In a surprising move, the Baltimore Ravens rolled the dice on veteran receiver DeAndre Hopkins, signing him to a modest one-year deal worth $5 million. So far, it appears to be a savvy investment.
However, some critics still insist that Hopkins’ best days are behind him. Ravens' star running back, Derrick Henry, embraces this misconception.
"I hope they keep calling him 'washed' because that has been working for us," Henry stated confidently during a recent press conference. "We need that mindset."
Despite being 33 years old, Hopkins is defying expectations and making an impact with minimal playing time. In just Week 1, he caught two passes for 35 yards and a touchdown on 18 snaps. Week 2 saw him target just twice in 10 snaps, yet he delivered again—this time with two catches for an impressive 64 yards and another touchdown.
Henry feels the age stigma is unfair, noting that many underestimate players as they get older.
Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken is optimistic about Hopkins' role growing as the season progresses. "We’re working to get him up to speed, and I believe his involvement will expand significantly. He’s a phenomenal football player, and the more he’s on the field, the better our team will perform," Monken explained.
Currently, Hopkins boasts 99 receiving yards, ranking him second on the team, trailing only Zay Flowers, who leads with 218 yards.
The Ravens, with Hopkins in tow, are gearing up for a Monday night showdown against the Detroit Lions.
