In a challenging debut, Cam Ward, the No. 1 overall draft pick, faced a rocky start in the Tennessee Titans' season opener against the Denver Broncos. Despite finishing with a less-than-stellar line of 12 completions on 28 attempts for just 112 yards, the numbers don't capture the whole saga.
Ward faced significant pressure, getting sacked six times and losing a fumble, yet he remains optimistic about his performance and his team. Addressing reporters, the rookie quarterback emphasized not pointing fingers at his teammates despite some dropped passes from his receivers.
"I’m never going to get on those guys for dropping a ball," Ward stated during a press conference. "I know I’ll throw interceptions eventually, and mistakes are part of the game. The key is maintaining a next-play mentality. I have faith they'll make the catches moving forward."
Taking accountability for the sacks, Ward reflected, "It boils down to me not getting the ball out quickly enough. Especially on those consecutive sacks, there's definitely room for improvement as we go week by week. I know no one is perfect. I have to work on my pocket movement, and I own that."
Looking ahead, Ward said, "The chemistry with the offensive line is developing. We're still in the process of getting to know each other, but we’re focused on bouncing back and securing a win this week against the Rams during my home debut."
As the Titans prepare for their next challenge, all eyes will be on Ward to see if he can navigate the bumps from his first game and emerge stronger in front of the home crowd.
