Daulton Varsho Set for Comeback!
Daulton Varsho is poised to make a triumphant return to the Blue Jays this Tuesday as they kick off a six-game homestand against the Red Sox. After undergoing surgery on his right rotator cuff last September, Varsho began this season on the 10-day injured list, but he’s ready to jump back into action. Although he took precautions with his throwing arm, he managed to get some at-bats as a designated hitter during Spring Training, and today marks his seventh game in a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Buffalo.
A Power Boost for the Jays!
The Blue Jays have impressively maintained their defensive strength during Varsho's absence, but the need for a power surge in the lineup has been critical. If Varsho can unlock the home run potential he displayed during his 2022 season with the Diamondbacks, it may just be the spark Toronto needs. In his time with the Blue Jays, he has a .398 slugging percentage with 38 home runs across 1,094 plate appearances.
Roster Decisions Loom as Varsho Returns
Varsho will slide back into his regular center field role, except against left-handed pitchers. Manager John Schneider mentioned to reporters that they have yet to decide who will be sent down to Triple-A to make room for Varsho on the 26-man roster, with left-handed hitting outfielders Nathan Lukes or Addison Barger being the most likely candidates.
Max Scherzer: Progress on the Road to Recovery
In pitching news, Max Scherzer has been active, throwing a 27-pitch bullpen session recently and continuing to build on that momentum. After dealing with a thumb injury that has plagued him for over a year, it’s uncertain whether this is the start of a complete rehab plan. Scherzer’s time with the Blue Jays has been limited to just three innings pitched before he was sidelined, and it seems he’ll remain out for a few more weeks.
Ryan Burr's Injury Update and Roster Changes
Meanwhile, Ryan Burr has been moved from the 15-day IL to the 60-day IL due to persistent right shoulder inflammation, ruling him out for the season's early months. This roster move appears to be procedural, with no indication of a setback. By shifting Burr to the 60-day IL, the Blue Jays now hold an open spot on their 40-man roster, hinting at potential upcoming roster changes. Could this be the front office preparing for a fresh waiver claim or eyeing a specific player?
