Why 'Horizon Adventures' Team Rejected Lego's 'Mumble Mode' for PlayStation's Iconic Voice Cast

This Thursday marks the highly anticipated launch of PlayStation's "Lego Horizon Adventures." This innovative game brings the vibrant post-apocalyptic world of Aloy, a well-known machine hunter, to life in a charming Lego format, which contrasts sharply with the serious tone of its predecessor, "Horizon Zero Dawn."
The development team at Guerrilla Games, known for their work on both "Horizon Zero Dawn" and its sequel "Horizon Forbidden West," expressed their excitement when Lego pitched the idea back in 2022. "Lego games are an excellent way to introduce a younger audience to the 'Horizon' universe," noted Guerrilla Games art director Roy Postma. He emphasized the joy of sharing these experiences with children, many of whom may not yet be able to engage with the more mature themes presented in traditional gaming.
A notable decision that set this project apart from other Lego titles was the choice to forgo the usual 'mumble mode'—the unintelligible babble that Lego figures often use in cutscenes—which helps to minimize localization costs. Instead, the team opted to utilize the voice actors from the original "Horizon" franchise, including Ashly Burch, who reprises her role as Aloy. "The voice acting was crucial for us to strike the right balance between the signature Lego experience and the rich storytelling of the 'Horizon' series," Postma explained.
The production faced a poignant challenge with the voice role of Sylens, originally portrayed by the late Lance Reddick. While a new actor has been cast, their identity has yet to be made public, adding an extra layer of anticipation to the game's release.
Kate Bryant, the product leader for Lego-branded games, emphasized the importance of voice acting and character depth. "Aloy is such a central figure, and we wanted to stay true to her essence while allowing her to embrace a more whimsical version of herself in the Lego world," she said. Bryant assured fans that Minifigure Aloy retains her fierce machine-hunting spirit, albeit with a playful twist.
Creating "Lego Horizon Adventures" came with its own unique set of challenges. The team at Guerrilla Games and animation studio Studio Gobo had to work within the constraints of Lego's limited color palette, which includes only 50 colors and seven shades of green. Triumphantly, they managed to capture the aesthetic of "Horizon" even with these limitations. "We actually experienced the opposite challenge; our Lego builds were so impressive that if you looked at a larger view, you wouldn't even realize it was made from Lego bricks," Postma remarked.
To give the game that authentic "Horizon" feeling while still maintaining its Lego charm, the team employed innovative building techniques using unconventional Lego pieces, such as chairs and bagels, to construct unique structures like the iconic Nora huts. Damian Buzugbe, lead concept artist at Studio Gobo, shared the journey of perfecting the designs, illustrating how the creative process evolved through various modifications until they achieved just the right look and scale.
Despite the departure from traditional Lego game elements, "Lego Horizon Adventures" promises to offer an engaging blend of nostalgia and new experiences for both young players and longtime fans of the franchise, making it a must-play this holiday season.
