Windsor's Mosquito Surveillance Sheds Light on West Nile Virus
The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) has raised alarms as they detect positive pools of West Nile Virus (WNV) in the area for the first time this year. However, the good news is that no human infections have been reported yet!
Dr. Aloosh, WECHU's medical officer of health, emphasizes the importance of vigilance: "Windsor and Essex County residents need to be proactive in safeguarding themselves from mosquito bites. Taking simple steps to eliminate standing water around homes is crucial in preventing mosquito breeding. Protect yourself and your family!"
Top Tips to Combat Mosquitoes!
To help you stay bite-free this summer, WECHU recommends the following protective measures:
1. **Repel the Biters:** Use insect repellents with DEET, Icaridin, or other approved ingredients on exposed skin and clothing. Always adhere to the label instructions!
2. **Dress for Success:** Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and a hat when venturing outdoors. Opting for light-colored clothing can also deter these pesky insects, as they are drawn to darker shades.
3. **Timing is Everything:** Minimize outdoor activities during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
4. **Clear the Clutter:** Regularly remove standing water from bird baths, buckets, old tires, pet dishes, and gutters around your property.
5. **Seal the Gaps:** Ensure that door and window screens are snug and free of any holes.
6. **Report Stagnant Water:** If you spot standing water in your community, don’t hesitate to call 311 or local by-law enforcement.
Continued Vigilance is Key!
The WECHU, alongside municipal partners, will maintain close surveillance of WNV activity throughout the summer. In addition, the 2025 larviciding program will be ongoing, tackling standing water issues and distributing vital educational resources to the public.
Stay safe out there and keep those mosquitoes at bay!
