Vancouver Unveils Exciting Plans for a New Park at False Creek!

In a significant development for outdoor enthusiasts and residents alike, Vancouver is set to welcome a sprawling 1.2-hectare park at False Creek. This decision was solidified following a vote by the park board on Monday night, marking an exciting step forward in enhancing the community's green spaces.

The park, named East Park, will first unveil its designs near the renowned Olympic Village neighborhood. Plans for Phase 1 of the project include a serene grove of songbird trees, creating a perfect spot for relaxation and reflection. Additionally, there will be a spacious, level lawn designed for small-scale community events, accompanied by a recreation area complete with seating for visitors.

One of the standout features of East Park will be its dedication to safety and accessibility. Separated walking and cycling paths will meander through the area, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the park and the stunning views along the waterfront without added stress.

Park board chair Brennan Bastyovanszky expressed enthusiasm for this new addition, stating, "The East Park Phase 1 concept plan represents an exciting new vision for this neighborhood amenity and waterfront destination. The designs introduce access to natural areas and large open spaces to support events as well as a variety of casual uses. I can’t wait to see the first phase of the East Park project come to life and I hope that residents and visitors see their feedback and aspirations reflected in the final plan."

A culturally enriching aspect of East Park will be the integration of Indigenous artwork and languages, which will be reflected in wayfinding, signage, and place naming throughout the park, fostering a sense of community and respect for the land's heritage.

While the official name of the park has yet to be revealed, construction for Phase 1 is slated to commence on the south side of the project site in late 2026, and completion is expected by late 2028. Following this phase, the second phase will focus on important habitat restoration efforts along the shoreline, as confirmed by park staff.

With over 12,000 residents within a 10-minute walking radius and 34,000 residing within just one kilometer, this new park aims to be a vibrant hub for those living in the area, as well as for visitors, workers, and recreational users alike.
