Brace Yourself: West Nile Virus Alert in Manitoba!
Southern Manitoba is now in the thick of peak season for West Nile Virus, and it's time for residents to take action!
Dr. Aly Dhala, the Chief Medical Officer for Southern Health-Sante Sud, has raised the alarm about Culex Tarsalis mosquitoes—the primary carriers of the virus—which are most active from mid-July through August, particularly during cozy summer evenings.
No Human Cases Yet, But Mosquitoes Are Infected!
While the good news is that there are currently no active human cases of West Nile Virus in the region, health authorities are monitoring a suspect case. Active surveillance through mosquito traps reveals a concerning number of infected mosquitoes, particularly in the City of Winkler, prompting the Manitoba government to take immediate action by spraying to control these buzzing pests.
Know the Risks: Who's Most Vulnerable?
West Nile Virus can cause a range of symptoms from mild flu-like issues such as fever, headaches, and body aches to severe conditions like brain swelling and confusion. Dr. Dhala warns that individuals over 50, those with weakened immune systems, and people with chronic health conditions face the greatest risks of serious complications.
Essential Precautions: Protect Yourself!
To guard against the West Nile threat, Dr. Dhala recommends several practical steps: use insect repellent containing DEET, wear long sleeves and pants during dusk and dawn, ensure your window and door screens are intact, and eliminate standing water in your yard. This includes removing items like flower pots and old tires that can collect water, effectively reducing mosquito breeding grounds.
"We are in peak mosquito season!" Dr. Dhala emphasizes. "Stay informed, protect yourself, and reach out to your healthcare provider if you experience any symptoms after getting bitten. Enjoy Manitoba’s fleeting summer, but take steps to minimize your risk!"
