Measles Outbreak Alert in Lower Mainland!
A fresh case of travel-related measles has emerged in the Lower Mainland, raising alarms among health officials this week.
The Source of Infection
Fraser Health confirms the infection originated from a traveler from Ontario who visited Vancouver and Chilliwack on April 20. This incident underscores the ongoing risk of measles, a highly contagious disease.
Potential Exposure Locations
Authorities state that the public may have been exposed to the virus at several locations on April 20, specifically:
- **Air Canada Flight AC2105**: Departed from Toronto at 8:38 a.m. and touched down in Vancouver at 10:09 a.m.
- **Vancouver International Airport**: Those in the domestic arrivals area, including baggage claim, from 10:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.
- **Chilliwack Coliseum**: Visitors between 12:30 p.m. and 3:15 p.m.
- **Coast Chilliwack Hotel**: Those in the hotel from 1 p.m. on April 20 to midnight on April 25.
Symptoms to Watch For!
Fraser Health cautions that measles can be transmitted through the air, making early detection and response critical. Symptoms may take up to three weeks to appear, and they include fever, dry cough, runny nose, and red eyes. A rash typically begins on the face and spreads rapidly throughout the body within days.
How to Protect Yourself
Fortunately, the majority of Canadians have immunity to measles either through vaccinations or past infections. However, anyone experiencing symptoms is urged to stay home and contact Fraser Health Public Health at 604-507-5471 for guidance.
Additionally, free vaccinations are readily available through Public Health, ensuring that individuals can protect themselves and their communities.
Stay Safe and Informed!
With these alarming developments, staying informed and vigilant is crucial. Measles can spread quickly, but with proper precautions, outbreaks can be contained. Be proactive and ensure you’re immunized!
