Waterloo Takes Bold Steps Against Measles Outbreak

In a decisive move to combat the rising threat of measles, Waterloo Public Health is ramping up its vaccination efforts. Following the provincial government’s initiative, specialized clinics have been established to vaccinate high-risk groups and effectively reduce the transmission of this highly contagious virus.

Who Can Get Vaccinated?

These clinics are prioritizing those without a primary care physician, including infants aged six months to one year, children aged one to four, and adults born on or after 1970. If you fall into one of these categories, booking an appointment online is strongly encouraged.

Expert Advice on Protection

Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang, Medical Officer for Waterloo Public Health, emphasizes the importance of the MMR vaccine: "The best protection against measles is the highly effective and safe MMR vaccination. Not only does it significantly lower the risk of infection, but it also safeguards the wider community from the spread of this disease."

Where Can You Get Vaccinated?

Vaccinations are being administered at two locations: 150 Main St. in Cambridge and 20 Weber St. in Kitchener. Each appointment lasts approximately 20 minutes, making it a quick yet vital step for your health.

Measles Cases on the Rise!

This urgent vaccination campaign comes in response to a concerning surge in measles cases within the region. Reports indicate that by May 21, the Waterloo Public Health unit confirmed 19 new infections within a single week, leading to a total of 78 cases. Additionally, there are 22 probable cases, pushing the overall count to 100.
