Ottawa's Measles Alert: What You Need to Know!
Ottawa Public Health (OPH) is sounding the alarm as the city records its first confirmed cases of measles since 2019. An adult and a child, both residents of Ottawa, contracted the virus during their international travels. OPH is actively reaching out to individuals potentially exposed to these cases.
Possible Exposure Locations!
If you were in the following locations at these times, you may have been exposed to measles: - **Food Basics** at 1021 Cyrville Road, Ottawa ON - **When**: Monday, April 21, 2025, from 5 PM to 8 PM - **Costco** at 1405 Blair Towers Place (near Ogilvie Road), Ottawa ON - **When**: Wednesday, April 23, 2025, from 6 PM to 8:45 PM
What to Watch For!
Anyone who visited these stores during the specified times should monitor for symptoms until the following dates: - **Food Basics exposure**: Monitor until May 12, 2025 - **Costco exposure**: Monitor until May 14, 2025 Symptoms may manifest up to 21 days after exposure, typically within 7-12 days. Watch for high fever, cough, runny nose, white spots in the mouth, and red, watery eyes sensitive to light. A rash usually follows, beginning on the face and spreading downwards, lasting between 4 to 7 days.
Action Needed: Stay Safe!
If you develop any symptoms, immediately contact your healthcare provider and inform them of your measles exposure. This will help ensure proper preparedness and protection for others. If you can, wear a medical mask when visiting any healthcare facility.
Check Your Vaccination Status!
Be sure to check your vaccination records against measles. The measles vaccine is noted as 3MMR,3MMRV, or 3M. Most Ontario children receive two doses of this vaccine by age seven.
