WordPress Introduces Telex: The Future of AI in Web Development

In an exciting development for web publishing, WordPress has launched a groundbreaking early version of its new AI tool, Telex. Co-founder and Automattic CEO, Matt Mullenweg, introduced Telex at the WordCamp US 2025 conference in Portland, dubbing it a 'V0 or Lovable' tool—akin to popular AI-driven coding services that simplify software development through intuitive prompts.

Seamless Content Creation with Telex

During his keynote address, Mullenweg showcased how Telex empowers users to easily create Gutenberg blocks—those essential building blocks of any WordPress website. In a live demo, he illustrated how a developer crafted a simple yet effective marketing animation using the tool.

Telex: An Experimental Frontier

Telex is currently available at telex.automattic.ai and is marked as 'experimental.' Users can generate content blocks by entering prompts, which are then delivered as downloadable .zip files, ready to be installed as plugins on WordPress sites or within the browser-based WordPress Playground.

AI's Promise and Challenges

This launch comes on the heels of WordPress's announcement of a dedicated AI team focused on creating products that align with the platform's long-term vision. Early testers of Telex noted that while the tool shows promise, there are still hurdles to overcome, with some test projects needing tweaks to function properly.

Despite these challenges, Mullenweg expressed confidence in AI’s potential to democratize publishing. "We aim to simplify what was once complex, making it accessible to everyone, regardless of coding skills. Our goal is open source, low-cost solutions available in every language," he stated.

While Mullenweg acknowledged some apprehensions surrounding the rapid evolution of AI—citing the concerns about a potential bubble—he remains optimistic. "At the core of AI’s advancement lies something incredibly enabling," he remarked, emphasizing the exciting times ahead for WordPress developers.

A Glimpse of Additional Innovations

In addition to Telex, Mullenweg unveiled another straightforward AI tool developed in just a few hours on Contributor Day. This tool acts as a WordPress assistant within the browser, further enhancing user experience.

WordPress's Ongoing Legal Battle

Amidst technological advancements, WordPress continues to grapple with legal issues, specifically with hosting provider WP Engine. Mullenweg asserts that WP Engine has benefited from WordPress’s efforts without giving back, requesting they license the WordPress trademark to clarify their association.

"This is slowly moving through the legal system, and we trust in the courts’ fairness," Mullenweg explained. "In a settlement conference, I was present, but the other CEO was not. That's all I can say about that for now."
