In a shocking turn of events at UFC 319, Dricus du Plessis faced his first defeat in the Octagon, leaving fans and analysts buzzing.
The former UFC middleweight champion, who has previously rebounded from losses, was notably outmatched in his title defense. Daniel Cormier didn't hold back his disappointment, questioning du Plessis's preparation for the August 16 showdown.
Khamzat Chimaev's wrestling prowess was on full display, raising concerns among other contenders in the division about the formidable opponent’s strength.
In light of this stunning loss, UFC legend Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson has made a bold suggestion: forget a rematch with Chimaev and consider changing weight classes.
Had du Plessis lost narrowly, a rematch might have been warranted. However, the reality is quite different. UFC President Dana White bluntly remarked that the scorecards should have reflected an even more decisive victory for Chimaev.
Even a comeback might not guarantee du Plessis another shot at Chimaev. On the Jaxxon Podcast’s recap, Jackson emphasized that there’s no point in discussing a rematch for 'Stillknocks,' advising him instead to explore other divisions.
"He just got destroyed. DDP shouldn’t even consider the words 'rematch' in the same breath for a while. He may need to drop to a different weight class; he seems stuck!" Jackson asserted.
Now, the burning question is who du Plessis will face next as he looks to overcome this setback. A match against Paulo Costa could be a possibility, but the likelier option involves one of the four fighters currently set to face off in bouts that will determine who challenges Chimaev next. Du Plessis might find himself up against contenders like Nassourdine Imavov, Caio Borralho, Reinier de Ridder, or Anthony Hernandez.
Once the dust settles from these upcoming fights, one could emerge to challenge Chimaev, while the other could be tasked with welcoming du Plessis back into the Octagon.
