Remembering a Life Lost: The Kind is Cool Campaign
On the seventh anniversary of the devastating Toronto van attack, a heartwarming initiative took flight at St. Francis Xavier Catholic School, where the family of victim Anne Marie D’Amico joined forces with students and staff to launch the inspiring 'Kind is Cool' campaign.
Honoring Anne Marie D’Amico: A Legacy of Kindness
The campaign was born out of a tragic event that claimed 11 lives on April 23, 2018, including 30-year-old Anne Marie D’Amico. Her remarkable family is dedicated to ensuring her memory contributes to positive change, having established the Anne Marie D’Amico Foundation to combat domestic violence.
Principal Maria Aloisi emphasized the importance of transforming sorrow into action, stating, "When there’s an opportunity to spread kindness, to have impact, you run with it." This sentiment perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the school's initiative.
A Celebration of Values and Community
During the heartfelt assembly, D’Amico’s family placed flowers as a tribute in the auditorium, reinforcing their intention: "It’s not meant to be a sad day," said her brother Nicolas D’Amico. "It’s about celebrating our true values and the love we have for one another." As he spoke, a sense of hope and resilience filled the room.
Creating a Vibrant Atmosphere for Kindness
The school's gymnasium was transformed with hundreds of purple turtles, representing D’Amico’s favorite color and a symbol of warmth. Students engaged in uplifting songs and shared personal reflections on kindness.
"I think of people who just feel bad every day. I just want to show them some kindness," reflected eighth-grader Massimo Armeni. Fellow student Temi Olorundare added, "We had a new student who’s settling in really well because everyone’s showing him kindness." Such testimonies illustrate the campaign’s profound impact.
Rewriting the Narrative of Kindness
Nicolas D’Amico shared how his sister possessed an "innate ability to be kind to everyone." His mission is clear: to challenge the misconception that kindness isn't 'cool.' By flipping that narrative, he and his family aim to inspire a culture of inclusion and positivity among the students and beyond.
With initiatives like the 'Kind is Cool' campaign, the memory of Anne Marie D’Amico continues to shine brightly, reminding us all of the transformative power of kindness.
