In a shocking incident in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, two heroic firefighters lost their lives, and a third was critically injured after they were ambushed while tackling a wildfire on Sunday.
Authorities suspect that the gunman intentionally set the fire to lure the firefighters into a deadly trap. Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris confirmed that the bold attack was premeditated.
Firefighters responded to a report of a brush fire at Canfield Mountain, a popular recreational area, when they unexpectedly came under fire. According to Sheriff Norris, “These firefighters did not have a chance.”
As chaos unfolded, approximately 300 law enforcement officers combed the hilly terrain, heavily armed and on high alert, unsure of how many attackers might still be present. Sheriff Norris described the tense situation: “We are actively taking sniper fire as we speak.”
Tragically, two firefighters were pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital, while another was left fighting for his life after emergency surgery.
Using cellphone data, law enforcement located a suspect who appeared to be entrenched in the rough landscape, armed with a high-powered rifle, leading to a standoff. A tactical team eventually found a deceased individual believed to be the shooter, identified later as Wess Roley.
As investigations continue, officials worry that more weapons could be hidden in the area, prompting the FBI to offer technical and tactical assistance.
In a somber procession, firefighting and law enforcement vehicles escorted the fallen heroes’ bodies to the medical examiner's office, as community members paid their respects.
Idaho Governor Brad Little condemned the attack, calling it a heinous assault and honoring the bravery of the firefighters. “I ask all Idahoans to pray for them and their families as we await more details,” he urged.
This tragic ambush highlights the dangers first responders face while risking their lives to protect communities from wildfires.
