Toronto Jazz Luminary Julia Cleveland Tragically Loses Life in Collision; Community Mourns

The vibrant Toronto jazz scene is reeling after the tragic loss of Julia Cleveland, a beloved musician and composer, who was fatally struck by a vehicle in The Junction neighborhood on Monday evening. According to Toronto police, the incident occurred when a Hyundai Elantra collided with a Hyundai Tucson at the busy intersection, veering off course and striking both Cleveland and her partner, John. While Julia was pronounced dead at the scene, John and the Tucson's driver sustained only minor injuries but were shaken by the event.

Julia's sister, Tara Cleveland, expressed her devastation, sharing with CP24, 'The world will not be the same without her.' Tara highlighted Julia's musical talents, revealing that she was working on exciting new compositions scheduled for a performance in just a month. 'She was not only incredibly talented but a genuinely amazing, beautiful person in every way,' her sister said.

In a harrowing turn of events, Tara noted that John performed CPR on Julia despite suffering from a broken arm while they awaited emergency services. 'He's pretty banged up and in shock, but he's an incredible guy. They were deeply in love,' she added.

Beyond her musical prowess, Cleveland contributed to the community as the finance manager for the Toronto Musicians Association, reflecting her commitment to supporting fellow artists and the music industry.

In light of this heartbreaking incident, Tara urged oncoming motorists to prioritize road safety. 'It just takes one moment of distraction and a little too much speed, and you can change lives forever,' she said solemnly. 'We all need to slow down.'
