Threads Closing in on X's User Base
Instagram's Threads is rapidly gaining ground on its competitor X, as revealed by fresh data from Similarweb. In June 2025, Threads recorded an impressive 115.1 million daily active users, marking a staggering growth of 127.8% from the previous year. In contrast, X reported 132 million daily users, but its growth rate has taken a hit, declining by 15.2%.
Bluesky's Rollercoaster Ride
While the decentralized platform Bluesky experienced a remarkable 372.5% year-over-year growth to reach 4.1 million daily users, it still lags far behind the giants. The platform saw an influx of users last year, driven by discontent towards Elon Musk's X, especially following the U.S. presidential elections. However, as complaints about Bluesky becoming a leftist echo chamber surfaced, many users are flocking back to Threads.
The Battle for Users: Threads vs. X
Threads and X are now locked in a fierce mobile competition, potentially reshaping the landscape for ad revenue, which is currently Threads’ only monetization tactic. However, X continues to hold a significant edge in web traffic, attracting an average of 145.8 million daily visits compared to Threads' mere 6.9 million.
U.S. Market Dynamics
In the U.S., the scenario shifts slightly, with Bluesky gaining 2.4 million daily web visits, eclipsing Threads’ 985,200. Mobile engagement paints a similar picture, with Threads pulling in 15.3 million daily active users versus X’s 22.9 million. Bluesky's U.S. mobile user base is notably smaller at just 1.1 million.
The Future of Social Networking?
Bluesky's long-term success may hinge on its advanced infrastructure and commitment to an open social ecosystem rather than transient protest-driven user surges. Users attracted merely by the platform’s opposition to X might quickly drift away unless their needs are met, leaning instead towards Threads or returning to X.
As Threads continues to rise, it remains to be seen how these platforms will evolve and compete in the ever-changing landscape of social media.
